РеакторEnterprises, like people, have the different fate and fortunes. On its way the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has faced the times of great rise and fall, the universal admiration and indifference as though the destiny yet again was tended to show everybody, that life is polarized.

The Plant had luck to be the first-born of the Ukrainian and Soviet power engineering by having provided the first current on September 26, 1977. It was operated having comprised one, later on two, three and finally four 1000MWe Power Units. After the high profile incident of 1986 the fleet of the existing Power Units was countdown: three, two, one… none. The complex story of Chernobyl NPP establishment, development, operation and closure will forever remain the fact of the world power engineering and world history at the end of the second millennium and the beginning of the third.

The typical qualities of the ChNPP workers were and still remain the ability to be mobilized in order to perform the most difficult tasks, high professionalism, and desire to work for the benefit of people. There is assurance of succession in personnel activity. The best humanities and competency, revealed by the first generation of Chernobyl people during liquidation of the accident and its consequences, are carried on within the activities of the new generation, which upon heart’s call arrived to work at the Chernobyl NPP from different regions of the former USSR. For these people the Plant and Slavutych, the town of nuclear power people, is the paternal home for a long time. Their life credo is the pursuit to guarantee the safe operation of the nuclear facility.

In recent years the ChNPP personnel has had to work so to say in full view of the whole planet. Generally speaking, each step comes into the view of the world community, policy, and science, different national and international regulatory authorities. The Power Plant is always visited by honorable guests, such as leaders of states, governments, international organizations, parliamentarians of the Europe and America and other continents, distinguished scientists and experts.

On December 15, 200, the Chernobyl NPP finally shutdown its Power Units in accordance with the arrangements set forth in the Memorandum of Understanding between G7 governments, the Commission of the European Communities and the government of Ukraine. It stopped performing the generation function. However, in future the Plant will still ensure the nuclear and radiation safety at all stages of closure that will last for many years, create industrial facilities for safe Power Units’ decommissioning, guarantee Shelter Object transformation into an ecologically safe system, and mitigate social and economic consequences of the Power Units’ pre-schedule closure.
