    SESAM 2021 Poliklinika visited ChNPP

    On April 6, the Chornobyl NPP was visited by the first pool of participants of a large international event – “SESAM 2021 Poliklinika” (Small European Students of Architecture Meeting).

    About 40 young students and architects from Ukraine, Belarus, Ireland, Latvia, russia, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and France visited the ChNPP Main Building and the Shelter Observation Pavilion.

    The first module of ISF-2 is filled!

    The first concrete storage module (CSM) at a new interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel (i.e. ISF-2) was filled on July 29.

    This event is another achievement in operation of ISF-2. It confirms that the fuel transportation is performed in line with the adopted procedure and in compliance with all safety standards.

    Milestone on the way toward NSC operation

    On 29 July, 2021, a Panel of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) approved the Conclusion of the nuclear and radiation safety (NRS) state expert review of ChNPP’s document “Safety Analysis Report for NSC-SO Complex.”

    “The Shelter Object is unique. It represents a part of the Chornobyl NPP industrial site along with a number of constructions created from the damaged structures of a former Unit 4 which lost its functions as a Power Unit; and from new constructions and systems which were built after the accident of 26 April 1986, and serve to monitor and correct the post-accident situation, including the mitigation of radiation consequences of the beyond-design-basis accident owing to blocking the effects of nuclear and radiological hazards on people,” — stated Head of SNRIU Hryhorii Plachkov at the opening of the Panel meeting.

    A message about explosive device (UPDATED)

    On July 28, a message from the unknown person was received at Chornobyl NPP e-mail reporting that an explosive item has been put on the area of ChNPP industrial site.

    Immediately after the information received, an emergency response unit was formed consisting of representatives of the Operator and divisions of the Security Service of Ukraine, National Police, National Guard, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine managing the verification of the message received.

    An emergency preparedness mode was announced at the enterprise, and measures have been undertaken to protect the personnel. The measures to prevent a terrorist threat are being carried out according to the plan.

    WANO MSM: Outcomes

    A final day of the Member Support Mission (MSM) of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) was held on July 16 at the ChNPP Training Center.

    During five days the representatives of three Regional Centres – Atlanta, Tokyo and moscow – as well as experts and scientists of the relevant organizations of Ukraine took part in consultations and discussions regarding providing the individual dosimetry monitoring of the personnel internal radiation exposure.

    The WANO MSM Coordinator Ivan Goncharov summarized the outcomes: “The issue of internal exposure is a very specific subject. Usually all NPPs aim efforts at the monitoring of external exposure, while the interest of ChNPP in the issue of internal exposure speaks for the high standards that this enterprise continues to follow.
