    Environmental Initiative at ChNPP

    Containers for separate collection of used batteries were placed by the Chornobyl NPP in its office buildings both at the Chornobyl site and in Slavutych city. When these special containers are full, all the collected batteries will be sent for disposal, and the containers reused.

    FYI: One unprocessed used battery which is decomposed in an environment is able to contaminate up to 16 cubic meters of soil with toxic substances. Those substances which are released from batteries and which contaminate soil, rivers and groundwater, include mercury, lead, cadmium, lithium, acids and alkaline compounds. Only 1% of 2,500 tones of batteries imported to Ukraine annually, go to processing.

    The suspected case of COVID-19 at ChNPP was not confirmed

    On 10th of June, a person with a suspicion on COVID-19 was detected among SSE ChNPP employees by results of rapid test. The additional laboratory analysis was carried out to clarify this diagnosis.

    Based on information of the Slavutych City Hospital management, a result of the analysis (polymerase chain reaction) is negative. The diagnosis of the COVID-19 respiratory disease was not confirmed.

    As of 15th of June, no cases of the COVID-19 disease have been detected among SSE ChNPP employees.

    Information about a suspected case of COVID-19 respiratory disease at ChNPP

    On 10th of June, a person with a suspicion on the coronavirus disease was detected among ChNPP staff by results of rapid test.

    To withdraw or to confirm this COVID-19 diagnosis, a follow-up sample (polymerase chain reaction) was taken and delivered to the laboratory in Chernihiv. The worker was sent to self-isolation.

    Seven contact persons were found for preventive purposes. These are workers of three ChNPP departments. They were recommended to self-isolate themselves.

    Expected date of receiving the PCR analysis – after 15th of June.

    Today at the ChNPP “Action plan for prevention of the COVID-19 spread at SSE ChNPP during the adaptive quarantine” has been put into effect. It is a supplement to the SSE ChNPP Order No. 676 dated 29.05.2020 “On introduction of the adaptive quarantine and ceasing of outage at the enterprise.”

    ChNPP withdraws from the quarantine

    The special labour routine, which had been introduced at Chornobyl NPP from 19th of March, ceased to have effect on 1st of June.

    ChNPP staff has taken up the production tasks in full strength with observance of the “adaptive quarantine” conditions. It includes temperature screening of personnel on the way to work, obligatory regime of wearing a face mask, equipping the face mask and disinfection points, social distancing and other measures to prevent the COVID-19 distribution.

    Until today only the operational staff ensuring the physical, nuclear and radiation safety of the site was working at the ChNPP in normal regime.

    Based on information of the Slavutych City Hospital, as of 29th of May, no cases of COVID-19 infection were confirmed in Slavutych, a satellite town of Chornobyl NPP.

    Honouring the memory of the Chornobyl liquidators-heroes

    Despite the quarantine, but in compliance with all requirements of personal safety, Slavutych people and workers of Chornobyl NPP honoured the memory of the Chornobyl heroes.

    On the eve of the sad anniversary, representatives of the city government addressed to the Slavutych residents with a proposal to keep the quarantine and to remember the fallen Chornobyl heroes not by the traditional laying of flowers, but by a window candle. Residents of the town, including many ChNPP employees, listened to it, and candles were lit in many windows on the evening of April 25.

    Representatives of the Chornobyl NPP active youth were on an honour guard at the memorial to the liquidators of the accident consequences, and the ChNPP union leaders honoured the memory of the liquidators with fresh flowers.

    The enterprise’s shift staff and administration laid flowers to the memorial near the Administrative Building No.1 at the Chornobyl NPP site.
